A compressor exploded in one of the Middle Delta Electricity Production Company (MDEPC) power plants in Daqahleya, resulting in the death of one worker and the injury of at least two others on Wednesday.
The company’s30 year old power plant, number 210,exploded during a scheduled maintenance procedure. The treasurer of the worker’s union in the governorateand the head of the plant’s workers’ union committee, Maged Al Amshaty, said that all the company’s power plants are old, and “that is why they have to go through regular maintenance”.
The worker was transferred to a hospital, where he died.
Al-Amshaty also said that MDEPC’s leaders, along with forensic experts and police officers, are currently at the incident’s scene to produce a technical report.
He assured that there is no suspicion of criminal intent, and that the rest of the workers are aware it is an accident which could result because of the nature of their work.
“It is a simple accident caused by a small compressor. I do not know what all this media fuss is about,” MDEPC’s Head Mahmoud Al-Naqeeb said.
Secretary General of the Electricity and Energy Workers Union Ahmed Mohab said that the killed worker’s family will be compensated according to the Labour Law and the company’s regulations.
The Middle Delta Electricity Production Company was founded in the 1970s and currently employs 6,500 workers. The company provides electricity for the Daqahleya, Beheira and Qaliubeya governorates.
