Sheikh Mansour bridge collapsed in El-Marg, Cairo, at 4am Tuesday, killing a police corporal and injuring two other people.
One hundred meters of the bridge collapsed, falling on the underground metro’s railway and blocking the Ezbet El-Nakhl and New El-Marg stations.
The Ministry of Interior reported that the bridge ignited after huts beneath the bridge caught fire.
“People were fighting with gas cylinders and one blew up, causing the fire,” said Ahmed Abdel-Hady, spokesman for the metro. State-owned Al-Ahram reported that several cylinders and an electric cable exploded.
A technical committee from the governorate and district formed at noon to evaluate the situation, Abdel-Hady said.
Cairo governor Galal Al-Saeed said the families affected by the incident will be provided with residency units, Al-Ahram reported.
A pedestrian bridge collapsed on 21 April, 2013 in Obbour, Cairo-Ismailia road, killing four and injuring 12 others.
