Isil Yalcin, President Ericsson North East Africa previewed the latest innovative solutions by Ericsson that can be used in the new Suez Canal projects which included the “Connected Digger” using  WebRTC and Real-Time Video.

The “Connected Digger” gives the operator an experience of controlling the machine that is as good as, or better than actually sitting on-site in the driver’s seat. This produces requirements that will really test the capabilities of the network as well as the applications providing the complete solution.

Yalcin added that they used the real-time communications framework developed at Ericsson Research to rapidly implement the end-to-end solution of sending the sound and video from the excavator to the operator and sending the controls to the excavator. A model excavator machine was demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2015 with a standard mobile phone with a 360-degree lens that was mounted on top of it. Using Ericsson’s real-time communication framework and WebRTC API, Ericsson developed an application to capture this 360-degree video, capture audio, compress both streams and send them to the operator.

Ericsson aspires to realize their vision for a Networked Society, where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential through this technology that enjoys low-latency, accurate feedback and innovative usage of 4G and 5G techonolgies.

Some 40 percent of global mobile traffic runs through networks Ericsson supplied. More than 1 billion subscribers around the world rely every day on networks that Ericsson manage. With more than 37,000 granted patents, Ericsson developed one of the industry’s strongest intellectual property rights portfolios that are able to fully make use of the “Connected Digger” technology.
