A military court began investigations into 59 Sudanese nationals and Egyptians on Friday, who are accused of attempting to illegally immigrate to Libya, according local media reports.
The 59 are also accused of being around military spaces without obtaining prior permission from the armed forces.
The immigrants were arrested on Wednesday during their attempt to illegally immigrate and were referred to military court. The referral of civilians to military courts was criticised by rights groups.
Illegal immigration operations have been on the rise due to the increase in the flow of refugees.
The majority of illegal immigrants and refugees flowing through North Africa stem from other parts of the African continent; however, the number of Egyptians illegally migrating has increased lately.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said young Egyptian men are more likely to illegally immigrate to improve their living conditions and to find jobs with higher salaries so they can afford to start a family.
