ISMAILIA, Egypt: Israeli border troops shot dead an Egyptian man trying to smuggle goods into Israel, Egyptian and Israeli officials said on Wednesday. The unnamed man, who was armed but carried no identity papers, was shot in the head and chest after an exchange of fire with Israeli troops on the central section of the border, said an Egyptian official, who asked not to be named. The Israeli army said he was part of a group of six people smuggling large quantities of marijuana in bags early on Tuesday. The other five people were arrested, it added. The Egyptian official said he was smuggling tobacco of the kind used in water pipes. The Israeli authorities told Egypt of the incident on Tuesday and will hand over his body on Wednesday. Smuggling is common along the Egyptian-Israeli border and often leads to clashes with border patrols. Reuters
