CAIRO: Egyptian authorities detained prominent Muslim Brotherhood member Hassan El-Hayawan last week immediately after a court acquitted him of firearms and other charges, the Brotherhood said on Sunday. Hayawan, a university professor in the Nile Delta province of Sharkia, was arrested during last year s parliamentary elections on charges which the Brotherhood said were fabricated to disrupt the movement s election campaign. The court in the Sharkia provincial capital of Zagazig acquitted him of all charges last Monday but Hayawan did not come out of prison, a Brotherhood spokesman said. The authorities have not made any new charges against him, he added. The Brotherhood group in parliament condemned the renewed detention in a statement on Saturday.

This measure violates the law and the constitution and is a threat to public freedoms, the group of 88 members said. An Interior Ministry spokesman said he had no information on the case. Reuters
