CAIRO: The American University in Cairo Press hosted a reception to celebrate the new publications Sunday evening at the Falaki Campus. AUC Press Director Mark Linz introduced the authors of the new publications:

AUC professor and author Galal Amin published The Illusion of Progress in the Arab World which analyzes the Western concepts of progress and backwardness and how, when applied to Arab countries and politics are misleading. As always, Amin s writing is laced with scholarly research, much humanity, and sly, subtle, humor.

Hala El-Badry, author of A Certain Woman (now out in paperback), launched the English translation of her latest novel Muntaha. Set in the sleepy village of Muntaha in the late 1940s, the novel depicts a portrait of rural life during the tumultuous events of 1948 and the end of British presence.

Just in time for Ramadan, the press has published a illustrated recipe book by Megda Mehdawy: My Egyptian Grandmother s Kitchen. This collection includes the dishes that make up Egypt s culinary heritage. The author also reveals the national cuisine and adds a section on food and winemaking techniques used by the ancient Egyptians plus an insight into the traditional beliefs about certain vegetables and spices.
