RAFAH: Egyptian security forces on Tuesday discovered a cache of weapons on the Gaza border destined to be smuggled into the Palestinian territories, security sources said. Thirty-two automatic rifles, around 28 pistols and a large amount of ammunition was found in the Ahrash area on the border of Egypt and Gaza, the source told AFP. No one was arrested as the weapons were found abandoned on the ground. It seems that the smugglers left the weapons and escaped when they spotted an Egyptian border patrol approaching, the source said, adding that an investigation has been launched while Egyptian police were scouring the area for any tunnels from which the weapons would have been smuggled. On Monday Israeli newspapers quoted Israeli Internal Security Minister and former Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter accusing Egypt of doing nothing to prevent arms smuggling. The smuggling continues, Dichter told the mass-selling Yediot Aharonot newspaper. If the Egyptians were to decide to act against the smuggling as they would act if the smuggling were being done into Egypt, they would battle differently, he said. AFP
