National Geographic, as part of its series Holidays Around the World, has published a book Celebrate Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr with Praying, Fasting and Charity. Bound by one religion, Muslims worldwide share similarities in the way they observe the holy month. As opposed to showing the similarities, the book s strong photographic images, however, highlight the differences in Ramadan practices as religion becomes interwoven with cultural traditions.
The National Geographic book is tailored to non-Muslims, and a younger audience, offering simple explanations of religious rituals and practices. The photographs are its only real strong point.
Having our own strong cultural traditions that are particular to celebrating Ramadan in Egypt, we were inspired to take a look at images from around the world:
