The Egyptian Ministry of Transportation will announce the winners of a deal regarding the first phase of the Cairo Underground third line which extends over 4.3 km on Oct. 20.

French companies, including Alstom and Alcatel, have won the deal for construction and central control works with the Egyptian Orascom Construction Industries, as they were the only consortium bidding for this category.

Saad Shehata, chairman of the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels, said the first indicators of financial proposals point out that the total cost of this phase will decline to LE 3.4 billion from the estimated amount of LE 3.6 billion as a result of cutthroat competition between international rivals.

Shehata said that contracts between his authority and the winners will be signed after the announcement of the results, but actual work is expected to start early next year and will continue for four years.

He explained that two consortiums are vying over the mechanical and electrical works, including one led by Japanese Mitsubishi and another led by a French group.

Two French alliances are competing over the rail lines works, but Japanese Mitsubishi and Chinese Catech have joined in the competition with France’s Alstom and Germany’s Siemens over supplies of wagons and engine vehicles.

The chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels said the losing bidders will have the right to appeal the commission’s decision within seven days of announcing the deal results.
