CAIRO: Authorities have arrested a Muslim Brotherhood leader Hassan Al-Hayawan, the group’s lawyer told The Daily Star Egypt.
Security forces arrested El-Hayawan at his clinic in the Nile Delta province of Al-Sharqia, on Tuesday night, according to an online statement released by the Brotherhood.
“This is an unjustifiable escalation, reads the Brotherhood statement.
The media office of the ministry of interior refused to confirm or deny the arrest. According to the Brotherhood statement, two other men, including one member of the National Democratic Party, were arrested in February along with Al-Hayawan on weapons charges. A state security court acquitted Al-Hayawan in June but he was rearrested on the day of his release and detained until late September.
According to emergency laws, the presiding judge has to approve a ruling and in Al Haywan’s case, the judge wanted a retrial, Brotherhood lawyer Abdel Moniem Abdel Maqsoud said.
“This is why Al Haywan was arrested . to stand for retrial in a different constituency. A different ruling indicting Al Haywan is now possible, he told The Daily Star Egypt.
The two other men who stood trial with Al Haywan in June, neither of them a member of the Brotherhood, were convicted.
