CAIRO: Revenue from the Suez Canal was $3.2 billion in the first 10 months of the year – boosting Egypt s coffers by $400 million more than in the same period in 2005, the chairman of the canal authority Ahmed Fadel said Saturday.
“The Suez Canal earned revenue of $3.2 billion between Jan. 1, 2006 and the end of October, as opposed to $2.8 billion during the same period in 2005, Fadel said in a statement.
He said the revenue rise of $400 million was up 10.3 percent on last year.
“In all 15,415 ships used the canal between the beginning of January and the end of October, as against 15,021 during the first 10 months of 2005, an increase of 394 vessels, Fadel added.
The Suez Canal is Egypt s third largest source of foreign currency earnings, after tourism and emigrants sending money home.
