Boeing backs philanthropy

Grant for American University in Cairo Gerhart Center

CAIRO: Boeing has announced a grant to the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civil Engagement at the American University in Cairo (AUC).

In hoping to encourage the practice of organized philanthropy in the Middle East, the Boeing grant will fund the “Cooperation in Education and Philanthropic Development which is aims to map the philanthropic organizations in the Arab world and is designed to help empower Arab civic groups seeking funds.

Coming out of this initiative will be a white paper recommending ways to strengthen and expand philanthropy in the Middle East. This and the map are to be unveiled in late 2007.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt is Boeing vice president for Global Corporate Citizenship and made the announcement at AUC. “The region has so many good projects that unfortunately never find their feet because they can’t get the support they need, she said, adding that “Boeing has a long and rich history of helping develop the landscape of philanthropic support and promote global corporate citizenship.

The Gerhart Center intends to use the information from this initiative to better promote the sharing of best practices and encourage the formation of new grant-making institutes.
