CAIRO: It can only be called a miracle, distraught train passengers said after they emerged with bruises and stiff joints from what could have been a fatal train crash with a truck hauling sand.
Apparently, the truck driver thought he could best the speeding train at a crossing in the village of Bardin in Zaqaziq.
The Mansoura-bound train, which originated in Cairo, was approaching the crossing when the operator noticed a truck crossing the tracks. Rather than pull the brake, which he assumed would cause more injuries, the train operator slowed down and hit the truck nonetheless.
The driver and his assistant as well as 19 passengers were injured. Another 23 suffered bruises as they attempted to jump to safety from the train windows.
