CAIRO: With the countless number of traffic accidents that festoon Egypt’s roads and streets, it would pay to heed the moral which says one cannot forever escape the crimes they commit.

One Egyptian motorist speeding on a highway in Switzerland thought he was scot-free when he returned to the homeland. On behalf of a Swiss traffic department, the Swiss public prosecutor requested Egypt investigate a traffic contravention committed by an Egyptian citizen during his tour in that European country in one unprecedented case, reported Al Ahram daily.

The story began as legal adviser Yasser Al Rifaae, of the Alexandria appeal courts received a request by the Swiss prosecutor urging him to probe into a traffic offence involving Egyptian national Ahmed Ahmed from Alexandria, who was found speeding as he traveled along with another Egyptian friend through the roads connecting Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

Ahmed and his friend were motoring from Lausanne to Bern crossing a tunnel at 146 km per hour, breaking the speed limits set on these roads.

The Alexandria prosecution department ordered Ahmed, who is currently out of town on a business trip, to appear for investigations.

His friend was surprised to hear about the case, saying that the Swiss authorities have spent on legal procedures more than the actual value of the fine. But amid his amazement he expressed his respect for the supremacy of law in Switzerland and the perseverance of its government to administer justice even in a case as simple as a traffic offence.
