CAIRO: The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced today that in recognition of the growth and expansion of its continuing education programs, its Center for Adult and Continuing Education will be renamed the School of Continuing Education (SCE).

According to AUC´s President David D. Arnold, the evolution of the university’s continuing education programs has resulted in a complex and vibrant set of programs that now play a significant role in helping the university extend its resources and services to Cairo, Egypt, and the region.

To better integrate these services into the fabric of the university as a whole, he stated, and in recognition of the university-wide outreach initiatives now being developed, we are adopting a new title and embracing a new philosophy for continuing education at AUC.

The change of names will be effective Jan. 1, 2007.

The university first began to offer continuing education programs in the 1920s as part of its division of extension; in the 1950s this division was renamed the division of public services.

In the 1970s, the Center for Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) was created to address the increased demand for the university’s continuing education programs.

During the 2005-2006 academic year, more than 40,000 students enrolled in CACE programs with the majority of CACEs students (26,897) enrolled in English language classes.
