Cairo: A senior official at Cadbury Egypt has denied that the company had recalled its products from the Egyptian market following reported news that Cadbury UK had withdrawn chocolate bars form the market in Britain and Ireland after traces of salmonella were found in product samples.
An Egyptian daily newspaper has recently published reports that Cadbury chocolate bars in the local market may be contaminated with salmonella after the infection of the company’s products was confirmed in the UK market.
Gawad Hatem Abaza, managing director of Cadbury Egypt, said his company’s products have no traces of salmonella. He added that the company’s sales in Egypt hit an all-time record, accounting for 40 percent of the local market.
He pointed out that 99 percent of the company’s products in the Egyptian market were locally manufactured, noting that less than 1 percent of chocolates were imported from Britain and the UK.
Cadbury Egypt opened its first plant in 1993. The company’s investments in Egypt amount to nearly US$70.1 million, with revenues recording E£458 million in 2005.
The company employs about 1,400 workers in Egypt.
