CAIRO: Two men have been sentenced to death for killing another man who had reportedly courted a girlfriend of one of the accused, reported Al Akhbar, highlighting that this is the first capital punishment case in 2007. Both Mohamed Saed Al Sayed Salem, 28, a former policeman and Usama Gazyi Hasuna, 28, electrician, killed Ali Morsi in 2005 in front of the back gate of the Nasr City courts. Salem and Morsi had been rivals vying for the attention of a young woman the court identified as Asmaa who worked in the same company where both of the men were employed. When Asmaa appeared to sway in the deceased’s favor, Salem and Hasuna talked Morsi into meeting them near the Nasr City courts, where they ambushed him and then slit his throat. But having doubts that they had not liquidated the victim both returned to find he was still alive. To accomplish the crime Hasuna passed his screwdriver to Salem who dipped it several times into Morsi’s bleeding throat until he died. Both were later arrested and confessed to their crime of passion.
