CAIRO: A small fire erupted at Cilantro’s large Mohandiseen location Monday, at about 11 pm, causing some damage but no major injuries.

Office manager Abdel-Latif Farahat told The Daily Star Egypt that the reason for the fire was a problem with the central air conditioning, which caused an electrical short circuit near the wooden bookshelves.

Farahat said the short occurred because of continuous running of the air conditioning, which he added could happen at any restaurant and was not due to negligence or faulty wiring.

Cilantro’s District Manager Khaled Salam estimates the cost of the damage is about LE 6,000.

The damage was visible near air conditioning shafts, on the ceiling, and on some furniture in the downstairs eating area by the window.

Salam estimates they will re-open late afternoon today.
