CAIRO: A Russian tourist drowned Monday near the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Safaga, the official Mena news agency said.

Medical examiners determined the 40-year-old Russian man died of asphyxiation, while the Russian embassy in Cairo declined to comment.

The drowning came as the authorities continue to search for two other missing Russian divers, as well as their Egyptian and Dutch companions, farther south along the Red Sea near the town of Marsa Alam.

Five divers went out Saturday to the popular Elphinstone dive site, known for its shark sightings, where they became separated from their boat by bad weather.

Late on Saturday night, one Russian diver reached the shore after several hours of swimming and alerted the authorities, prompting a massive search involving boats from local dive clubs.

The search is still ongoing.

Russian news agencies also reported that another Russian diver died on Saturday elsewhere in the Red Sea.

The entire Red Sea, along the Sinai desert and Egypt s eastern coast, is a premier diving spot that attracts tourists from around the world.
