Constitutional amendments are aimed at broadening citizens' freedoms says Mubarak

CAIRO: President Hosni Mubarak, in statements to Mena editor-in-chief earlier this week, explained that the constitutional amendments proposed are basically aimed at promoting democracy, “deepening its values and expanding citizens’ freedoms within the framework of political reform in the various domains.

Also Mubarak called for conducting extensive studies on each one of the 34 articles he has suggested as amendments on the extent to which they will achieve the interests of the general public, the State Information Service reports added.

On the controversy regarding the amendment of article No. 77 of the constitution, which determines the number of terms of the president, according to the reports, Mubarak noted that altering the presidential term is a right of public who elect their leader, adding that such a right should not be confiscated, the reports continued.
