CAIRO: In an attempt to resume its role on the political scene, the Kefaya movement chose Abdel Wahab El Meseiry as its new General Coordinator.
El Meseiry would lead the Movement, which calls for democratic reform, succeeding George Isaac.
El Meseiry told The Daily Star Egypt that Isaac was the one who initiated the change in leadership.
The selection process was held on Wednesday at the Egyptian Center for Studies in the presence of 40 of the movement’s leading figures. They applauded Isaac’s initiative to give up his post.
“Kefaya sets a model for democracy for political powers in Egypt, said El Meseiry, “We have been used to ‘late president’ and the ‘ousted president’ but we have never been used to seeing the ‘former president’ in this region.
In a statement on the Movement’s website, Isaac was quoted saying “This is the slogan the movement is trying to make a reality, referring to his decision to give up the post and nominated El Meseiry.
The Movement has taken the measures to ensure rotation of power on all levels to pus the movement forward in political life, Isaac added.
The coordinating committee agreed to make the leadership of the Movement a collective through a committee that aides the coordinator in accomplishing his tasks, giving more attention to the governorates, and not focusing all the work on Cairo, added El Meseiry.
In addition, the Movement is working on choosing a new spokesperson to replace Abdel Halim Qandil.
