CAIRO: The Arab League will continue its support for Iraq and is seeking a replacement for its chief diplomat in Baghdad who quit last week, the organization said Wednesday.

Secretary General Amr Moussa said that he is looking at a number of suggested names to head the league s delegation in Baghdad, confirming that the League would continue its efforts to support Iraq by achieving agreement between all Iraqi factions, it said in a statement.

The Arab League envoy to Iraq, Mokhtar Lamani, resigned on January 22, citing bitter and painful events as well as the inability to achieve anything serious or positive.

Lamani, 56, was appointed in March 2006 by Arab foreign ministers with a mission of aiding national reconciliation efforts in the country which is wracked by conflict between its different ethnic and sectarian groups.

The Moroccan is one of the few Arab diplomats working in Baghdad, with most ambassadors from other nations performing their duties from the Jordanian capital of Amman.
