CAIRO: Constitutional reform being carried out in Egypt will not undermine the position of Sharia, or Islamic law, as the principal source of legislation, Gamal Mubarak, son of the Egyptian president, said in remarks reported on Friday.

There is no intention to bypass Article 2 which says the Sharia is the main source of legislation, Mubarak was quoted as saying in the government daily Al-Ahram. He stressed that this article will remain in the country s constitution.

Gamal Mubarak, who heads the National Democratic Party s policies committee, said: The aim of some allegations about an amendment to Article 2 of the constitution… is to sow confusion about the planned amendments.

President Hosni Mubarak recently put forward a series of proposals to amend the constitution, which led some Egyptian intellectuals to ask for Article 2 to be changed to make Sharia one of the sources of the law and not the principal source.

The request angered the opposition Muslim Brotherhood whose members control one fifth of parliament s 454 seats.
