HAMBURG, Germany: Hamburger SV signed Egypt forward Mohamed Zidan to a four-year contract on Sunday.

The German club will pay a 5 million euros ($6.7 million) transfer fee to Mainz 05, which was demoted from the Bundesliga this season.

The 25-year-old Zidan, who scored 13 goals in the last 15 games for Mainz 05, will reportedly earn -2.3 million (US$3.1 million) a season.

He is the player that we really wanted, Hamburg sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said.

Zidan s acquisition was agreed upon at a special meeting of Hamburg s board, which has to approve decisions by the club s management after several expensive transfers last season backfired.

Hamburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga only after a late surge ended the danger of relegation.
