BEIRUT: Arab League chief Amr Moussa was on Wednesday holding a second day of talks with Lebanese leaders on a tough mission aimed at bridging the chasm that has paralyzed political life for the past seven months. There are difficulties, but they are not insurmountable, League Secretary General Amr Moussa told reporters after a meeting with pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud. There must be a political solution and measures that bring an end to insecurity, he said. His delegation, including officials from Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia, was to meet later Wednesday with army chief Brigadier General Michel Sleiman and representatives of the powerful Shia opposition group Hezbollah. The Lebanese army has since May 20 battled Sunni Islamist militants of the Fatah Al-Islam splinter group in a deadly siege of a Palestinian refugee camp in the north of the country. Beirut s anti-Syrian parliamentary majority alleges the militants are linked to Syria, a charge denied by Damascus. On Tuesday the Arab League team met Western-backed Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, opposition leader and parliament speaker Nabih Berri, and Walid Jumblatt, a key leader of the anti-Damascus majority in parliament. Lebanon has been paralysed by a deep rift between its pro- and anti-Syrian camps since the opposition, led by Hezbollah, quit the government in November. And beyond the existing tensions dividing Lebanon lies the shadow of even greater instability, with a presidential election due in principle in September to replace Damascus protege Lahoud. Arab foreign ministers decided in Cairo last week to send a delegation to Beirut to urge the feuding Lebanese political camps to return to negotiations, following the June 13 murder of anti-Syrian lawmaker Walid Eido in Beirut. They also said the delegation would consult with Lebanese leaders and regional and international parties to work towards creating an atmosphere conducive to resuming a Lebanese national dialogue.
