CAIRO: A security official says Al Qaeda members have revealed the head of the group in the country has fled for the Gaza Strip.

The official says the arrested members have revealed during interrogation that Khaled Mahmoud Ahmed escaped to Gaza when Egyptian authorities began arresting members of his group in April.

Gaza is now under the control of Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

Egyptian authorities arrested 35 people in April accused of having links with Osama bin Laden s network.

State security prosecutors began to officially investigate the charges on Saturday.

Cairo s metro system has been on high alert after a bomb threat against one of the stations on Thursday, with bomb squads and sniffer dogs deployed and metal detectors installed at stations.
