Airport security stepped up for terror alert

CAIRO: New security regulations are not just restricted to Cairo International Airport but are in place all around the country due to speculations of a possible terrorist attack, according to a security official at Cairo International Airport.

Airport-users now have to go through increased security. The identity cards of both passengers and anyone who approaches the buildings are checked for clearance before entry is allowed.

The security official added that they are increasing the services they offer in accordance with other security regulations around Cairo after expectation of a terrorist attack was declared.

Ethar El Shabrawy, who traveled to London last week from Cairo Airport, was subjected to a thorough luggage search after a bomb threat in the airport.

Before take-off, the captain said that there s a technical problem with the engine so we have to change the aircraft, she said, as we got off the plane, there was police and ambulances everywhere.

After proceeding to the gate, the passengers found policemen searching through their luggage and, after identifying their bags, they returned to the same aircraft.

Even though El Shabrawy admits that there was an air of panic during the search, she still believes that the precaution was necessary.

The way the situation was handled was pretty good and increased security is necessary to make people feel safe, especially nowadays with everything that s going on in the world, she added.
