Popular American musical group Ozomatli will visit Egypt July 28-31 as part of a tour of the Middle East funded by the US State Department and with the support of local corporate sponsors CocaCola, Mobinil, and Oriental Weavers. Ozomatli’s two shows are free of charge and will be open to the public. The first concert will be held at Qaitbey Citadel in Alexandria on July 29 at 8 pm; and the second will take place at the Mahka open theater in Cairo’s Salah Eddin Citadel on July 30 at 8 pm. Both venues can be used thanks to the support of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.

Ozomatli are a multiethnic, multiracial group of ten members, playing primarily Latin, hip hop, and rock music. The group was formed in 1995 in Los Angeles. They are known both for their activist viewpoints and their wide array of musical styles – including salsa, jazz, funk, and reggae. Their work is often described as the people s music.

They are a living example that music can transcend any cultural or social boundary. Ozomatli is devoted to community involvement and their time in the Middle East will include outreach activities such as visits to orphanages, schools and community centers. Ozomatli’s mission is to spread a global message of peace and understanding through diversity in music.

Ozomatli recently released their fourth album, “Don’t Mess with the Dragon, on Concord Records. The group won two Grammy awards, the recording industry s most prestigious honor presented annually by The Recording Academy.
