CAIRO: The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Suez Cement Company partnered to organize a multimedia advocacy campaign to spread awareness about workers’ safety in the cement industry.
Salamtak Bel Donia will be launch in early September, targeting workers and their families to promote safety measures and precautions that should be taken to avoid accidents.
ILO estimates that over two million workers die each year worldwide from work-related accidents or diseases, and this number is increasing annually.
According to Nashwa Bilal, program associate at ILO’s sub-regional office for North Africa in Cairo, the campaign’s main objectives include encouraging protective equipment, reporting risks and discouraging negative comments from other workers about safety measures.
“One of ILO’s mandates is improving working conditions by promoting occupational safety and personal health, said Bilal. “This campaign comes within the framework of our target, as well as the target of Suez Cement.
In the pilot campaign, explained Bilal, ILO will relay the message to its target audiences through television, radio, and posters. The next stage will entail more groundwork, where participants will talk directly to workers in the field.
