LONDON/CAIRO: In a phone conversation with Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Thursday, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Mark Malloch Brown formally apologized for the assault on Egyptian Imam Mohamed El Salamoni.
The attack took place on Friday August 10 just outside the Islamic Cultural Center in London.
The Egyptian Sheikh was leaving the Mosque and was assaulted by an unknown attacker, receiving injuries to the head and eyes.
The police later arrested 40-year-old Ryan Donegan who is being charged with perpetrating the attack.
Brown expressed his deep sorrow for the tragic assault, and said that the British people respect all religions, including Islam.
Abdul-Gheit thanked the Minister for his apology, but also stressed the importance of properly investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
