CAIRO: Ahmed Hossam Mido revealed he was annoyed by the opponent fans’ abuse aimed at him during Middlesbrough s 2-2 Premiership draw with Newcastle on Sunday.

The Boro striker had been subjected to a torrent of sick taunts shortly before his 29th minute equalizer to Charles N Zogbia s early strike.

I m used to it from opposition fans but I just think this was ridiculous, said the Egypt striker.

I don t know why they do it. maybe some of them were drunk or something, I just don t know. It made me want to score goals. I was delighted to score once and wanted another.

The English FA said they will investigate the case, looking into the possibility of a racial abuse by the Magpies’ fans.

We will certainly be looking into it, an FA spokesman told The Guardian.

Mido was also astonished by the referee s decision to give him a yellow card after he celebrated the goal by pointing his finger to his lips, making a shut up sign to the boo boys.

I was very frustrated when the referee gave me a booking, he said.

I don t think I deserved a yellow card but that is football, I suppose, and you have to get on with it.

I don t understand why I was booked, though. I m told it was for security reasons but I don t see how that is possible. I don t see why what I did affected the security of the fans. I just put my finger to my mouth to say quiet.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate backed the former Tottenham man when he questioned the system that punishes an individual for a single act while ignoring the original chaos caused by the 3,000 Toon supporters.
