ISMAILIYA: Three Egyptians were seriously injured in an explosion Monday of a leftover land mine east of Egypt s Suez Canal, hospital officials said.

The three – an army officer, a soldier and a Bedouin – were on a foot patrol in the East Lakes area when the mine exploded. They were taken to the Agrout military hospital in the city of Suez.

Many land mines still lie unexploded in the zone around the Suez Canal, remnants of the 1956 Arab-Israeli war and the 1967 Middle East war.
