A teenager and six other people who tried to rescue him have drowned in the sewers of a village of southern Egypt, a security services official said.

Ayman Mohammed Gomaa, 17, fell through the manhole of a sewer, which he was trying to unblock in Rifa, near the town of Assiut.

An uncle, Mohammed Gomaa, jumped in to try to save him but he also drowned, as did five other would-be rescuers, the source told AFP.

Local authorities have decided to pay LE 5,000 pounds in compensation for each victim.
