CAIRO: The fifth race of The World Professional Powerboating Association’s (WPPA) Class 1 World Championship will be held in the North Coast resort of Porto Marina Oct. 25-27.

The news was announced at a press conference Saturday by a panel that included the Governor of Matrouh Mohamed El-Shahat, the WPPA Chairman Saeed Hareb, and the Chairman of Amer Group Mansour Amer.

Prior to the conference, Amer Group – the development company hosting the event – signed an agreement with the WPPA, in the presence of Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and the Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garranah, to host the championship in Egypt for the next five years.

The competition in Porto Marina will be contested by seven nations including Norway, Spain, Italy and Qatar.

Powerboat racing is often described as Formula One car racing on the water. Similar rules apply, and boats race around a delineated stretch of water, or circuit.

A powerboat is typically characterized by the design of the boat used for the sport, with a high power-to-weight ratio and a hull design that allows for extremely high speeds and exceptional handling.

A brief demonstration was given along the Nile before the beginning of the conference in which the boat reached extremely high speeds between the 6th October and 15th May Bridges.

The event is expected to attract a large audience and will be covered by 142 international television stations.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to bring such a dynamic sporting competition to Egypt, said Mansour Amer.

“It truly highlights the high level of confidence in Egypt as a premier destination for first-class events, reflecting the modern, sophisticated lifestyle Egypt is becoming known for around the world.
