CAIRO: Thirteen Egyptian soldiers and a driver were killed Monday when an army minibus collided with a water tanker in Egypt s Sinai Peninsula, police said.

The 14 men were traveling from Suez toward Al-Tor in the South Sinai province when their minibus hit a water tanker parked on the side of the road, said Dr Said Yehya, director of emergencies at Al-Tor Hospital. There were no casualties in the water tanker, but all the van s passengers died in the accident.

The police have begun an investigation.

Deadly road accidents are common in Egypt and tend to be blamed on poorly maintained vehicles, bad roads and lack of respect for traffic regulations. Police estimate that at least 6,000 people are killed every year in traffic accidents.
