“The pretty English rose has grown thorns, Burberry Prorsum designer Christopher Baily told British Vogue magazine in its September issue. In a nutshell, his words captured the fall 2007 fashion trends.
The romantic summer look is long gone. Remember how comfortable you were, with those over-sized loose tops and dresses? Well that’s gone too because this fall the look is shapelier and sexier. Park your floral prints and whites aside for now, and try out the harder look of autumn.
To better describe the feel this season, it is steering away from the helpless aura to the more powerful, sleek look.
First off, black is back. This is exciting news for everyone, because black hides those love handles and pot bellies making you look slim and elegant. But the down side is that your simple black clothes won’t really cut it, as this season’s blacks come in as many textures as you can pull off at once. From patent leather to feathers and everything in-between – be daring with your blacks.
To break the funeral look many people dread, bring in metallics that are still sizzling hot. A pair of gold leggings, a little silver jacket or sequined top (studded is in – especially oxidized metal on anything from clothes to accessories) lights up the darkness, and keeps you within the required sharp look.
Black can also be mixed with a little bit of white; fall loves monochrome, or a little grey to break it. Don’t shy away from intense lipstick shades that can also brighten up the look.
A splash of bold block colors gives a bit of a futuristic look, which is also apparent this fall. Shades like mustard can truly animate an outfit.
Boots as usual are one of the most fun dress-up items that appear after summer. Unfortunately in Cairo, it is still too hot even in October to wear them. But when you do get the chance, try to team them with a miniskirt because it gives a fashionable edge. Mid-calf boots are the ideal height this season.
Chunky zippers are around as well. They can run across, or even diagonally on a dress or jacket.
Gloves too are in this season, but avoid them in Cairo weather.
Yet it might be cool enough to wear light jackets soon (hopefully) at least at night. There are two types of jacket you must own. First, the fitted jacket, which looks a bit like a tight blazer, and is fabulous when matched with skinny jeans. Second is the cropped jacket, which is short and puffy and usually has short sleeves. These look adorable on a simple tunic dress which is also in vogue.
Tunic dresses that were so much fun in the summer are luckily still in but with thicker fabrics and darker shades looking less romantic but instead smooth and unbreakable.
The high waist pencil skirt is around too, if you’re looking for a sexy office look.
When it comes to jeans, or any trousers for that matter, the wide-leg/high waist is back again. Think of the 1970s silhouette. They are voluminous and comfortable, and look great when paired with a tailored top half.
Ok so now you’re dressed to kill, it’s time to update your ‘do. Luckily so many looks are in, it’s easy finding one that suits you. For those gutsy enough, the short bob is making a comeback. This looks good very straight, but for those days when you’re too lazy to go to the hairdressers don’t fret because it looks adorable when curly. For those who can’t let go of their long locks, try a fringe. Whether it’s a dominant at the front, or a wispy side one that borders the forehead; bangs are back.
For those who are too afraid to try anything new, you’re in luck as well. One of the best hairdos that match the sleek look this season is pulled back low chignons – no cutting required.
Well now what are you waiting for? Get started. Fall is a short season and you deserve to look the part all the way through it.
