EL-ARISH, Egypt: A Turkish man shot by Egyptian border police as he tried to illegally cross into Israel died of his wounds Friday, a hospital official said.
The Turkish national was attempting to cross into Israel on Thursday along with six members of his family when guards called on him to stop, according to security officials.
When he did not comply and continued trying to cross the barbed wire marking the border, the guards opened fire, shooting him in the head, the officials said.
Dr Imad Kharboush of the nearby El-Arish hospital emergency unit, said the man died Friday.
On Monday, Egyptian border guards also seriously injured two Turkish teenagers trying to cross into Israel searching for jobs.
In early and late July, Egyptian border guards shot dead two Sudanese refugees trying to sneak into Israel, while in mid-September an Eritrean man was killed under similar circumstances.
Israel estimates that 2,800 people have entered the country illegally through its border with Egypt in recent years searching for jobs. Most have been from Africa. Associated Press
