CAIRO: Etoile Sahel are close to leapfrogging Zamalek into second place in CAF rankings after lifting the Champions League trophy at the expense of Ahly.
The Tunisian side were awarded five points after defeating Ahly, the ranking s runaway leaders, 3-1 in the competition s final on Friday.
They have now 49 points, just one short of Zamalek, who failed to bag any points this season after being eliminated from the Champions League preliminaries at the hands of Sudan s Hilal.
Etoile have the chance to go second when they participate in the World Club Cup in December in Japan as they will be given two points in case they win any match.
They face Mexico s Pachuca in the tournament s opener.
Etoile will also play in the African Super Cup next February against either Sfaxien or Sudan s Merrikh, who face each other in the CAF Confederation Cup final.
