CAIRO: Mostafa Bakry, editor of Al-Osbou newspaper and independent member in the People’s Assembly, will file a request for a new law to protect the rights of Egyptian women working in foreign countries.
Speaking to state television, the MP said he would present the request to Minister of Manpower Aisha Abdel Hady.
His announcement comes after a 16-year-old girl from Al-Fayoum reportedly told the Egyptian embassy in the United Arab Emirates that she was forced to work as a prostitute by her employees who had promised her a waitress job in the gulf country.
Bakry told “Al Beit Batak talk show that his request will help prevent similar incidents in the future and will protect Egyptian women’s honor.
“This request is a superficial and failed means to solve the problem, Magdy Ahmed Hussein, head of the Islamist labor party told Daily News Egypt.
According to Hussein, the problem has cultural and ethical roots that need to be addressed first.
“The country should provide a better social and economic environment for its youth to find suitable work opportunities, he added explaining that this would prevent youth from resorting to “immoral alternatives to make a living.
Bakry was not available for comment at time of press.
