CAIRO: German airline Lufthansa announced the appointment of their new Cairo-based regional director at a press conference in the Marriott hotel earlier this week.
Klaus Fussi will take over the reigns on Jan. 1 from Peter Emmerlich, who will retire after over 40 years in the aviation industry.
Fussi first joined Lufthansa in 1972, and is no stranger to Egypt having already spent five years in Alexandria from 1990-1995.
The airline also announced increases in demand for premium class travel on its Egyptian flights.
Lufthansa currently operates 17 weekly flights between Egypt and Germany, including two daily flights from Cairo, making it one of the most frequent European carriers serving Egypt.
The company’s Vice President for Sales and Services in Southeast Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan, Joachim Steinbach, also spoke of Egyptair’s acceptance into the ‘Star Alliance’ team.
The two airlines, along with other members of the Star Alliance will move into the Terminal 3 upon its opening in 2008.
“It will be like one kitchen serving a number of restaurants, Steinbach said.
Fussi was tight-lipped when asked about any plans for development and expansion in the region.
“First I will get to know the market and my team. Then we will take it from there.
