CAIRO: The family of a woman who killed a taxi driver and one other person during a road accident has reached a financial settlement with the victim’s family, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The settlement of over LE 350,000 means the charges against Sara Fahd El-Khatifi will be dropped.
Last week, El-Khatifi crashed into the taxi of Hassan Said Ahmed, killing him and an unidentified Azerbaijani passenger.
The defendant, who was originally alleged to have been a Saudi princess, was a student living in Cairo with an Egyptian mother and a Saudi father, belonging to the famous El Khatifi family.
Negotiations between the two families’ lawyers were held on Jan. 10 at the Press Syndicate’s headquarters after the victim’s family refused to meet with the defendant’s family at the Saudi Arabian embassy. The defendant’s family also refused to have representatives from the embassy go to a slum area, where the victim’s family lives.
The settlement money was made out to Ahmed’s children – Dina, 7, Ghada, almost 2, and 14-year-old Karim, who is disabled – and is currently under the guardianship of the victim’s friend.
The family also received donations after their story appeared on the television program “90 minutes on Al-Mehwar channel.
Ahmed’s family had allegedly been under pressure to settle this case from Saudi officials at the Saudi Arabian embassy, as well as from Saudi Arabia after the case had received a lot of media attention..
