CAIRO: Two Egyptian army officers are among 14 alleged Islamists arrested on charges of planning attacks in Israel, one of their lawyers said on Saturday.

The 14 were held following raids in Cairo and Alexandria on Egypt s Mediterranean coast in November, said Muntazer Al-Zayat, a frequent defender of alleged Islamists.

No official announcement of the arrest of the two army officers and 12 civil engineers was made at the time. A security source could not immediately confirm the men, all unnamed, were being held.

Security services claim the men formed an Al-Qaeda linked cell and planned to launch unspecified attacks on Israel from Egypt, according to Zayat.

The authorities also claim that documents seized during the police raids showed the suspects alleged involvement in plotting attacks, he said.

Egypt became the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. -AFP
