CAIRO: Egyptian authorities yesterday discovered explosives in a new underground tunnel near the border with the Gaza Strip, a security source said.

“Inside the tunnel, we found 24 electric blasting caps, four missiles and 10 bombs, the source said, adding that it was found during a routine patrol just north of the divided town of Rafah.

Israel has often accused Egypt of doing too little to counter alleged arms smuggling via tunnels dug from Gaza into Egyptian territory. Cairo has denied this.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Egypt to do more to stop arms smuggling.

“Egypt has to do more. Those tunnels need to be dealt with. We’re prepared, obviously, to give (assistance), but the will to do it is very important here, she said. – AFP
