CAIRO: Fourteen people were killed on Tuesday when a land dispute erupted into armed clashes between rival gunmen northwest of Cairo, a security official said.
An initial toll had also counted 15 people wounded, but four people later died of their injuries in hospital.
The fighting erupted in the Wadi Al-Natrun area, famous for its Coptic Christian monasteries, but the official emphasized there was no sectarian aspect to the clashes.
“It was a purely financial dispute between investors and there was absolutely nothing sectarian about it, he said.
The fighting in the Wadi Al-Faragh area near Wadi Natrun only ended when police intervened.
The area has seen soaring land prices in recent years amid a construction boom – AFP
