CAIRO: The Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt (BCFE) is organizing its sixth annual “Run for Cure next Friday, March 14.
“Join us as we walk, jog or run to fight breast cancer at the Gezira Club, reads the invitation. The event aims to draw attention to the threat of breast cancer and to raise funds to support related services and education.
According to the National Cancer Institute in Cairo, more women are diagnosed with breast cancer than any other type. While this also applies for other countries, the rate of survival and complete recovery is lower in Egypt due to less awareness about the illness and consequently less chance of early detection.
The organizers give participants the option of entering as individuals or forming a team. The event will start at 9.30 am and finish at 3 pm, and will include laps for both professionals and amateurs. Other entertaining and educational activities will also be available during the day.
The annual event is known for attracting numerous celebrities – a picture of Youssra running with children is featured on the invitation cover – in addition to politicians and the Cairo’s socialites.
Starting Sunday, March 16 to Thursday, March 20, the club’s clinic will be dedicated to the Breast Health Week, providing examinations for club members and employees. Coupons for discounted mammograms – offered by several radiology centers – will also be available.
“We can’t afford to waste another day. Until there is a cure, until the race is won, the BCFE invites you to join us in the important race for life. We will cross the finish line together, said Mohamed Shaalan, BCFE chairman.
