CAIRO: Eleven members of a single family were killed and another 16 seriously injured on Saturday in a road accident.

The official MENA news agency reported that the vehicle carrying the victims was driving at “a crazy speed on the highway linking Cairo and the northern port city of Alexandria when it collided with two oncoming trucks.

The injured, all of whom where gravely hurt, were taken to a hospital in Tukh, Qalyubia province, MENA added.

All the dead were members of one extended family from the Nile Delta town of Dekhila who were heading home from Cairo after shopping for furniture for the couple, the source added.

The couple was riding in a truck carrying the furniture and were unharmed.

A security source told Reuters that 16 other people traveling in two minibuses were injured when a truck traveling at high speed in the opposite direction strayed into their lane and crashed head-on with the first vehicle, causing the second to plough into it.

On March 16, 23 people – among them 21 police officers – died in a head-on collision between a police truck and another lorry on the same highway. The previous month, 29 people were killed in a pile-up on a road south of Cairo that was blamed on fog. -AFP and additional reporting by Reuters
