RAFAH: Egyptian security forces are searching for a group of militants driving around the Sinai peninsula allegedly planning to carry out attacks, a security official said on Tuesday.

The group is armed and driving around in four pick-ups, the official said, adding that security forces had stepped up checkpoints on roads in the north and south of the Sinai peninsula, home to the popular resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

These people are suspected of planning terrorist attacks in Sinai, the official said, without elaborating on their nationality or exact number.

Egyptian authorities said last week that they were hunting two Sudanese citizens armed with a truckful of explosives and suspected of planning attacks on tourists in the Sinai peninsula.

Between 2004 and 2006, a series of attacks hit Red Sea resorts in the Sinai peninsula, leaving dozens dead and many more wounded. -AFP
