A trip to the Nile by four friends ended in tragedy when one of them toppled into the river while posing for a photograph.

The victim is said to have stood on the fence of Al-Gam a (Cairo University) Bridge and asked his friends to take a photograph of him. He suddenly lost his balance and fell into the Nile, and is presumed to have drowned.

His friends reported the incident to detectives, who moved into the scene and met Mohammad Ramadan Zaki, 17, a student.

Zaki said that while he was with three of his friends on the bridge one of them, Hafez Sayed Hafez, 24, a worker, had been balancing on the railings of the bridge but had been unable to keep from falling.

The other two friends gave the same account. A note of the incident was filed with the police.

The Prosecution Office ordered that the three friends be released, and the victim s family be notified.

The River Rescue Unit has been assigned the task of searching for and picking up the body, and the police investigation department is making enquiries to determine whether there was suspicion of a malicious act.
