CAIRO: Most first-division teams have voiced reservations over Mahmoud Al-Gohari s proposal to introduce a new U-23 competition.
The Football Association (FA) technical adviser Al-Gohari believed the new competition would give the opportunity to some players who don’t get enough exposures in their clubs.
Top teams in Egypt such as Ahly and Zamalek repeatedly expel players whom they consider out of form or not up to par. Clubs are only allowed to register just 30 men in their local squads.
However, when those players shine with other teams, Ahly and Zamalek become embroiled in a fierce battle to re-sign them.
Al-Gohari s proposal would help the clubs field their fringe players in the new competition.
Al-Gohari s recommendation was turned down by the majority of the FA members, who believed the association will not be able to finance the new competition.
They also think that it will not technically benefit Egyptian football.
Most first division teams have also opposed the plan. Egyptian champions Ahly are one of the few exceptions to support the proposal.
